Who qualifies for Medicare before age 65?
People who have received Social Security disability benefits for 24 months, or who have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS, can qualify for Medicare before age 65.
When does Medicare start?
If you enroll during the 3 months before your 65th birthday, Medicare generally starts the first day of your birthday month. Enrolling later can delay your start date.
What if I keep working after 65?
If you have active employer coverage from a company with 20 or more employees, you may be able to delay Part B without penalty and use a Special Enrollment Period when that coverage ends.
What happens if I miss my Initial Enrollment Period?
You may need to wait for the General Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31) and could face lifetime late-enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D.
